Tutorial

Follow these seven steps to learn how to create your own patterns, train a neural network and use it to generate music with you. The screenshots are from an earlier release but the principles are the same.

1 Double-click Breakage2.jar to load the application.

Breakage loaded

2 Press "Save". This saves the current empty pattern to the pattern database. Breakage now includes an empty pattern by default.

Saving an empty pattern

3 Write a drum pattern in the editor. Use the left mouse button to turn hits on and off. Enter a name for the pattern and press "Save". Now you have two patterns in the database.

Saving a first pattern

4 Write another pattern, give it a new name and press "Save". Now you have three patterns in the database, enough to train the neural network.

Saving a second pattern

5 Press "Start". The net starts training on these two patterns. See the error gradually counting down. When it reaches the error limit, the net will pause training.

Training the neural network

6 Edit the patterns' kicks and snares and press "Generate". Breakage's neural network generates a hi-hat response to compliment your kick and snare parts.

Generating hi-hat responses to kicks and snares

7 Check "Auto". Now as you edit your pattern Breakage will automatically generate responses to your edits. Use right mouse button to drag hit velocities for a fluid response.
